The reason that no VoIP client is proffered on any 2.xG/EDGE cell phone is that latencies in the general architecture are unbearably prolonged. This is well known in particular sections of the mobile carrier world; various carriers experimented with VoIP for Push-to-Talk services and gave up. Skype has as well recognized it if you study some of the FAQ’s on mobile services. Also you would tie up loads of resources (unnecessarily), both on the device (CPU especially) and on the data net with a VoIP call. 2 services extend a VoIP on the mobile phone running over a 3G service: Skype for Windows Mobile and Truphone. Both, however, warn you that you may have extraordinary data program use and costs. VoIP on WiFi operates beautifully but not over wireless carrier data networks. I go back to what I have stated for a while now; Give me the IM on the device platform itself but use some fundamental circuit switched service to establish the calls. Several recent examples are on Skype Journal; search “Skype Blackberry” to see all the posts.
